(Yes, I know I shouldn't try to be a poet. ;)

I love it how songs bring back memories of times or even particular moments. And places. And pictures, images. Like Antony and The Johnsons' "Atrocities". It's sooooo Autumn 2006. It's sooooo Dworzec Centralny.

Unfortunately this happens mostly with songs, which I don't listen to often. The more often I listen to a song, the more vague the memory becomes and the more I need to consciously revoke it.

I'm looking for a job. This is going to be soooo September 2009. The bad thing is that I haven't listened to anything new for a few weeks or so, so there's nothing to musically attach this time to. Having copied all the music I have to one folder I feel like exploring everything from the past in this much more convenient way.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://equustalks.blogspot.com/2009/09/music-sounding-memories-abounding-yes-i.html' title='Music sounding, memories abounding. A few months ago I would strongly believe in being almost omnipresent on the net, because it felt like nowadays not having a life on the Internet meant not having a life whatsoever. OK, I'm exagerrating on this a bit, but my attitude has really changed. I'm still fully reachable by e-mail, but I don't really use GG anymore and my blog(s) are dead compared to what they used to be in the past. And honestly, I don't feel that I'm losing much. Life has so much more to offer than publishing bits and bytes of information on what is really a lifeless, electronic network. :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://equustalks.blogspot.com/2009/09/now-were-all-wiser-and-smarter-or-so-it.html' title='Now we're all wiser and smarter. The sentence is:

"I heard three loud noises and ran to the window."

It's not particularly difficult, but not a directly translatable thing either.

Michał is in a funny situation. Have been too busy. But I hope you will like this one. It's quite long and I hope it is also some good food for thought. :)

I decided to write an entry that actually has some content. Not that my entries never have content. Only that I sometimes feel that their content, is, well, quite non-contenty. Whatever it means. Today's content is “moving in together with your boyfriend or your girlfriend or any other important person”.

For a person who has been living with their parents all their life it is actually a very intriguing experience. I’ve been living with Michał for 3 months now (yes, time is passing really fast) and I believe I already have something valuable to say about the experience.

The first thing I would like to say is that if any of you are planning to move in with somebody in a few days or weeks, I would advise to start looking for potential reasons of tensions already now and accept as a fact that at one point or another those things are highly likely to appear problematic. A good idea is to start thinking of solutions already now too. No, I wouldn’t call this pessimism. I am much more inclined to call this very healthy rational thinking - because if you really care about your relationship, you want things to be as good as possible. There is no chance that there will be no conflicts. Take it for granted that they will appear and that you will both have to deal with them – and it is easier to do it when you are mentally prepared for such situations.

Love and all the other kinds of romantic feelings are totally wonderful, but living together inevitably brings out all the smallest differences between the two persons to the light. Moreover, as crazy as it may seem, such silly things as difference in the attitude towards how necessary it is to actually wash the dishes and clothes can unexpectedly turn into really depressing tension-maker. At the beginning both sides are usually fully ready to compromise or to pretend that nothing wrong is happening – but later on such a way of acting becomes tiring. With Michał we have successfully resolved most of those issues by now, but what has become very clear in the course of time is that…

Not saying what hurts you and keeping it for yourself only always gives very bad results. It’s so obvious that in a relationship you need to talk things over, right? Well, in my relationship it seemed obvious at the beginning but turned out not to be so obvious later and had to be made obvious again. So, let me remind you: DO tell you boyfriend/girlfriend when you fell that something is wrong and always BE READY to listen and look for constructive solutions. It is really simple. So just go and do it. ;)

One technical aspect which I would to bring about here is living together in a one-room flat. Nothing wrong with it. Just be ready that you will be spending time together all the time when you're both home. Again - nothing wrong with it. At least until you discover that for some people 1 AM is time reserved for sleeping while for others it is the time reserved for most intensive and productive work. This may sometimes be difficult to reconcile.

Postscriptum from Michał:
An exercise for potential move-in partners (let’s call them this way ;)). Michał advises to sit in some nice place and take two sheets of paper, one for each partner. Each person writes down what may be a potential issue on his/her side in one column and what may be a potential issue on the partner’s side in another column. Then they compare the lists and if they find some common points, they know that these are the issues that are the most urgent ones to address. :)

Do the dance.

Since I've been vehemently criticised for neglecting my blog (a bit of an overstatement, but we do like overstatements, don't we?) I mean - about two or three weeks ago I had a very emotional conversation with Michał about how my life is stuck in one point. Well, let's think, this year I:
- found a boyfriend (hugs and kisses for him :))
- wrote, did research for and defended my MA thesis
- moved out from my family home and moved in with my b/f
- struggled for a moment with the fact that my dad got to know that I'm into guys - I didn't intend it to happen, but what could you actually expect when you move in with a guy and appear everywhere with him?

OK, I didn't fully realise my plan of going to the gym for 10 months - did it only for 7. But, hey, MA thesis >is< a more important thing than going to the gym and when it turns out that you really need quite a lot of time to do it the way you want (including doing research which in the end turned out not to be feasible by means of the Internet only), then it is fully understandable that you give up some other things. And going regularly to the gym for 7 months is definitely something too.

As for the things which happened I also learnt some new stuff which I've been trying to learn for years - such as ironing, doing the washing and basic cooking! At my family home my mum always did everything for me and quite consistently did everything to keep me away from such things. And whenever I tried to do something on my own, she would nearly start a rant about how badly I did everything and that she wants to do it herself. Well, OK, good for her that she likes things done perfectly, but I ended up being 25 and unable to do some really basic stuff. After the move there was no other option than to learn those things - and better quick. So I did. And now, if it wasn't for my laziness (especially in relation to cooking), they're obvious and easy for me. Using a washing machine actually seems very simple. Would it be OK to say that I learnt nothing valuable this year?

OK, I'm very much stressed about the fact that I'm 25 and totally at the beginning of my professional life. But is this so untypical? It’s true that I finished my studies a year after most of my peers because I took a year off and honestly this was a bad decision, because I did almost nothing valuable during this time. Almost. During the past 4 years I invested a lot of time in making up for lost opportunities related to my personal life - I invested my time in people, getting to know them. I got to know the gay community especially well. Some might ask - what do you actually need such knowledge for? Well, I felt that I needed it and I feel that it may come in handy many times in my future. Gay community, at least the one I have around me, is very specific and I believe it’s better to know how to handle things with those people – including not trusting them too much. I had much fun, I learnt a lot about some types of people – and now I feel much more ready to invest my time and energy into some other things, such as finding a job that I will feel money-wise and fulfilment-wise comfortable with. This may take some time, but clearly that's how things are with me – I need time, especially that I feel I lost a lot of it in the past, and not really through a fault of my own. The only way to go is to accept it - a fact I forget about way too often.

So I believe I have done some things this year and I cannot say that nothing has moved further. New challenges are ahead and I want to face them. And enjoy them. :)

Oh, and a song I'm totally in love with:

The Rakes - We Danced Together

Update on translations, anniversaries, Excel and bad nutrition habits.

It's official now - writing in English hasn't really been very beneficial for attracting commenters. Well, I guess these are prices you just have to pay if you insist on doing one thing and not another.

The door lock translation is almost finished, there are some very little final touches which I have to add, but overall it's done. Next parts of the translation are about to come, though. I'm happy about this, because this means income, and income is never bad.

My parents are having their 40th wedding anniversary today. It was supposed not to be organised, as a result of revelations related to my dad getting to know about me, but it is being organised in the end. I just hope that no stupid talks will come about. I really don't feel like discussing my sexual life on the family forum again. I don't wish that to anybody.

I've taken up improving my MS Excel skills. I didn't realise this was such a big and feature-loaded piece of software, especially if you add Visual Basic as an element of it. Why Excel - you may ask. This is because my sister is (still) trying to find a job for me at the bank she works for. And in banks they generally tend to value MS Excel skills rather highly. Actually, when my sister showed them my CV some time ago, they said it looked OK, but there's no proof of my ability of working with numbers whatsoever. Well, they're completely right, there's no trace of number-related activities and skills there. But maybe I could be able to change it somehow. :)

Haven't been really listening to any new music lately. I've grown to like the latest album by Beck quite much, I guess we both have with Michał. Generally I tend to listen to some old stuff at the moment.

As for Michał, who likes to be mentioned on my blog ;), well, we're having sort of a new idea for our nearest future (understood as the coming few months, let's say), but we're not saying what it is yet. :) I also need to praise Michał here for one thing – one guy, with whom he’s writing business e-mails in English, commented on Michał's English as being very good. And really, I seldom help him. :) I'm very very proud to have a boyfriend whose good English gets noticed. :) And even more to know that he reguarly works on improving it further. :)

My sister told me off a bit, because she thinks I don't have adequately healthy eating habits. And again, she's right. I need to work on that. I've got very lazy with regard to food-preparing since I started doing most of it on my own.

That’ll be all for now, I guess. ;)

Noon.

A weird day I am having. Working on the translation to maybe finally finish it. Björk playing in the background. I came back to reading Joyce's "Dubliners" and I'm getting to like this book more and more. I've just read "A Painful Case" - one of the stories from it - and found it very sad and very true at the same time. But actually the day is essentially weird because I got a bit down at one moment, as a result of reading some completely irrelevant comment on the Internet and unnecessarily relating it to myself. Actually, "down" is a wrong word. It just all made me sort of overexcited and thinking too much. But I feel that it's slowly drifting away, thus making space for some more anticipated thoughts and states.

On Sunday I watched an interesting, if disturbing, movie. The title was "The Return" (Polish "Powrót"). It is a Russian movie about a father who comes back to his sons after a 12-year absence. I liked the visual side of the movie very much. The story was simple, but very moving. It was the ending the I found very disturbing. All in all I recommend this film. (I totally suck at reviewing movies, bah.)

Thoughts.

Getting emotional about completely irrelevant matters is just so totally me.

Why actually write in English?

I'm beginning to understand some things related to my family - things which have haunted me for years now. A scythe was used in order to cut some wild bushes out on a plot of land in a small town just outside Warsaw (Michał insists on calling it "suburbs" - it is an adequate name actually). ;) Also - grilled meat was eaten, in barely bearable constant presence of great numbers of hungry mosquitoes. But overall it was all very enjoyable and really made my day. :) Today the heat seems to have given in a bit, which is a great relief. :)

Door handles this time.

Looking for some cool (meaning "different") designer door handles? It's unnecessarily loud. But has some interesting elements.

I've been intending to learn these languages*, at least to be able to roughly understand them, for a long time. Real ones and "sort-of" ones.

This summer's really weird, I think I've written about it already. Maybe the reason is that I actually rarely go out anywhere. Maybe travelling to an office to work on translation is not such a bad idea. I think I'll go somewhere today.

On the other hand life in general is fascinating with it's capacity of making me realise, well... things. Realise things. Different things. Like what has changed and what has not in the past 4 years. 'Cause, you see, it's 4 years since I first visited my psychiatrist. Feels almost like birthday. 4 years is actually quite a lot of time. Many interesting things happened. Well, actually, I started having a life, as absurd as it may sound. Although to be honest I'm not yet satisfied. Some things could be better. And I guess it might not be long until I start working on that again.

Right now it's Wednesday and I'm not much further with the door lock translation than I wan on Monday, which is something I definitely do not like.

Spent a very nice evening yesterday. Michał's friend visited us, partially because it was her birthday a few days ago, and partially because she just visits us from time to time. She's definitely a fun person, I like her very much. We watched some funny and/or cute videos on the Internet. And ate a lot of ice-cream. And other, not necessarily diet*, things.

I actually start enjoying writing in English. I believe I feel less discomfort about not being fully able to express myself than I expected. Altough I'd lie if I said it's never there. :)

* - there's no such a word as "dietetic", is there?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://equustalks.blogspot.com/2009/07/birthdays-real-ones-and-sort-of-ones.html' title='Birthdays. Michał's changed his working routine a bit, well, more than a bit, but the change seems to be good for him. :) I'm still translating. Got one new, very interesting, yet short, translation job to do yesterday. This time it was related to international trade and contained such fascinating acronyms as LOI, FCO, BCL, FOB and some others. ;)

I'm going to have a new mobile probably, yay. My parents are so nice that they decided to give me one as a present in celebartion of my university graduation. This goes to show very well to what extent my father got over my being gay. His first reaction was >really< bad, but now things seem to be almost perfectly normal - after just a month. That's just what my family is like - we're never angry at one another for long.

I had a very anti-work day yesterday and started playing Heroes of Might and Magic III, which probably wasn't the best of ideas. ;) I'm trying to stay more concentrated today. ;)

It occurs to me that I have a very hard time trying to write about anything fun what I do - because I basically do very little fun stuff. ;) What is even worse is that I don't mind it really. :) I still listen to a lot of music and take my iPod everywhere I go. Somehow this seems to satisfy me. ;)

Fighter!

I'm in a fighter mode. It helped me quite a lot when I was writing my MA thesis and now it helps me with the translation too. It's very difficult to find some reliable, thorough descriptions of door lock parts on the Internet. However there are a few books about locksmithing on Google Books and in one of them I've just found something which I couldn't find anywhere else on the Internet. Yay for Google Books.

On a different note I bought a T-shirt yesterday. I have a hard time buying T-shirts since there are few which I like - and ever fewer which are in an Equus-acceptable price range (I'm very stingy sometimes). And yesterday I just went into the Pull&Bear store in Złote Tarasy, saw the T-shirt, looked at the price, tried it on to be sure that it looks good on me and bought it. The whole process lasted for like 2 minutes. This happens really rarely, so I'm very happy about it. ;)

Music: Underworld - Moaner

An ensorcelled dandiprat. We ate some chicken salad and played Scrabble and talked about all the latest stuff.

Talked on the phone to the guy, for whom I am doing the translation. He seemed a bit (well, more than a bit) surprised when I told him about the price. I was surprised that he was surprised because I've been translating stuff for him for about 1,5 years now and he knows how much I charge.

Apart from that - I should work more.

We've e-mailed and talked on the phone with Michał a bit. We had a bit of a psychological/philosophical chat. Which is good. :)

The underground passages of Dworzec Centralny don't smell nice in the summer. Well, they never do, but today it was exceptional. I was also surprised when I passed one of the sports supplements shops (stalls? don't know how to call them). Selling the stuff was actually a guy, who looked like a regular gym-goer. Very unusual. It seems that they usually choose some dorky/skinny-looking guys to work there for some reason. On the other hand it's fascinating how often the people, who sell there, change. I think I never saw the same person twice.

Finished reading "Gottland" yesterday. I feel that I've gained basic confidence in talking about door and gate locks (as absurd as it may sound. ;)) At the beginning I completely didn't understand what I was actually translating. It wasn't really the translation that was difficult - it was difficult to understand words that were actually Polish. Now, after exchanging a dozen or so e-mails with the guy, who commisioned me with the translation, in which he explained to me all the basic facts about door locks and how they are built and how they work, I really feel that I know what I am doing. It's fascinating, because in the Polish terminology related to this topic there is a lot of mess, since everybody uses the words in the way he or she feels like, without thinking that this may lead someone else to total confusion. On the other hand, the English terminology is different in UK and US - not to mention Australia etc. Plus, the Internet is full of botched translations made by Chinese companies, which export cheap Chinese locks to other countries (OK, to be honest, the Internet is full of botched translations made by companies from ALL OVER the world ;)). All this makes my current job somewhat crazy and intriguing at the same time. :)

Sunscreen.

I get so hopelessly nostalgic at times. ;)

Yellow curtains.

I can't limit myself on my own blog and/or try to guess what the readers may expect. (Yeah, I know, that's old, but I need to be reminded of this regularly.)

I like playing with Michał's yoyo with a somewhat absurd "Marriot Warsaw" logo.

I got a bit of a wild idea yesterday. If I put it into life I'm sure to report this here by means of photos.

I haven't watched anything lately. This needs to be changed. The last film I saw was "Cat Soup" I guess. It's a totally abstract and surrealistic 30-minute Japanese animation. Michał enjoyed it very much. I was very confused with it. As much as I like absurd stuff, this was really weird - or maybe I just had a bad day for watching things like that. Still, I recommend it if you like watching a film, which doesn't have much in common with logic, but still has a story, which seems to make sense - even if only feeble. :)

You never know.

We went to a party with Michał yesterday and we experienced one of the nicest reactions to our/him/my being gay ever. Anything. :)

I'm doing so many things that I somehow I don't really feel that summer has finally arrived. I was anticipating it very much, especially in February and March. The last months of cold weather are always the worst ones for me, because I'm tired with the temperatures and snow and stuff. And now, there it is, sun all the time, heat. And somehow it's somewhere outside my daily existence, it seems.

Further changes are expected. They are not to be mentioned yet, but they will surely come. Today I'm going to work on one of them. :)

The translation freaks me out. I spent like 1.5 hour yesterday on finding some way to translate "przeciwbieżny" into English and I'm close to the conclusion that it simply means "reversible" or "working/operating both ways". I just need a confirmation from a friend that it's a good way to translate it. The nice thing about the translation is my increasing knowledge of door locks. If I need to buy a door lock in the near future, I will at least know what I am actually buying. ;)

Oh, and it just occured to me that half of the year has already passed. Makes me start thinking about all the stupid stuff again. I do think about it sometimes even when I'm not alone, but definitely not to such an extent as at the moment. Also, paradoxically, the amount of work done is smaller than when I'm not alone.

Weird, to think that all my friends and acquaintances, both real and Internet ones, would be to know me as the same kind of person. Having one uniform Internet identity, fully compatible with all the elements of my real identity. One way of presenting myself, not choosing some facts for some and other facts for others (since I never lie; I only choose to hide some facts sometimes). Weird. But an attractive thought at the same time.

Żołądkowa Gorzka

We went cycling with M., it was nice. He felt like cycling around the local forests and I think he enjoyed it a lot. :)

Now I'm going to study a bit to my thesis defence. Thesis defence is a complete mystery to me. What is a thesis defence actually? Nobody ever taught me how to defend a thesis, so how am I supposed to know how to do it? Fortunately there are so-called colleagues, who tend to exchange valuable information, such as what kind of questions they were asked during their own defence. This helps. Definitely. Although it's not quite the kind of help I would really expect.

I think I'm going to drink some wine this evening. I've just eaten a little too much pizza, so wine is just what I need. I got a bottle from the parents of one of my students. It's nice, when they give me wine. Only last time they gave me something, which was totally undrinkable due to a very strong smell/taste/aroma of sulphur in it. I tried to drink it with my friend during the last New Year's Eve, but we ended up drinking Żołądkowa Gorzka instead. If you're not Polish, try googling Żołądkowa Gorzka. I had never drunk Żołądkowa Gorzka before. It was quite tasty actually. Only it was the mint-flavoured one, as far as I remember. Still, I was surprissed how well it tasted with some orange juice. Well, a lot of orange juice in my case. I'm not much of an alcohol-drinker, fortunately.

Title of the blog.

Those who read my previous blog know what the original title was - if anyone has any better suggestion for translation of "ględzenia", which is "waffling" at the moment, please tell me about them. My expression in this language is much more limited than in my native Polish, but I don't really feel like I need to express any very complex ideas and inner experiences (descriptions of the latter being much more typical of me), so why not try with English once again - to practice it and maybe to reach some more international audience.
